A level set simulation of dendritic solidification with combined features of front-tracking and fixed-domain methods

چکیده
A method combining features of front-tracking methods and fixed-domain methods is presented to model dendritic solidification of pure materials. To explicitly track the interface growth and shape of the solidifying crystals, a fronttracking approach based on the level set method is implemented. To easily model the heat and momentum transport, a fixed-domain method is implemented assuming a diffused freezing front where the liquid fraction is defined in terms of the level set function. The fixed-domain approach, by avoiding the explicit application of essential boundary conditions on the freezing front, leads to an energy conserving methodology that is not sensitive to the mesh size. To compute the freezing front morphology, an extended Stefan condition is considered. Applications to several classical Stefan problems and twoand three-dimensional crystal growth of pure materials in an undercooled melt including the effects of melt flow are considered. The computed results agree very well with available analytical solutions as well as with results obtained using front-tracking techniques and the phase-field method. 2005 Elsevier Inc. A level set simulation of dendritic solidification of multi-component alloys
A level set method combining features of front tracking methods and fixed domain methods is presented to model three-dimensional microstructure evolution in the solidification of multi-component alloys. Phase boundaries are tracked by solving the multi-phase level set equations. Diffused interfaces are constructed from these tracked phase boundaries using the level set functions. Based on the a...
متن کاملA Fixed-Grid Front-Tracking Algorithm for Solidification Problems. Part II - Directional Solidification with Melt Convection
A numerical study of directional solidification has been performed using a fixed-grid front-tracking algorithm. The directional solidification of pure tin, as well as the horizontal Bridgman growth of pure succinonitrile, were investigated. In both cases, the growth front was stable and non-dendritic, but was significantly distorted by the influence of convection in the melt and, for the Bridgm...

In this work, rising of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid under microgravity condition was simulated. The related unsteady incompressible full Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a conventional finite difference method with a structured staggered grid. The interface was tracked explicitly by connected marker points via hybrid front capturing and tracking method. One field approximatio...

A numerical model has been developed for the determination of liquid flow permeability through columnar dendrite during growth. The model is inclusive two stages, first numerical evolution of the dendrite shape during growth, and second numerical determination of the interdendritic liquid permeability. Simulation results shown which solute concentration by evolution of dendrite shape could resu...
